APOLOGY TO THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

On October 1, Archbishop Durocher joined all the bishops of Canada to present a formal apology to the indigenous peoples of the land for the involvement of Catholic organizations in the Canadian system of Indian residential schools between 1892 and 1996. Read the letter here.

A few days later, it was announced that the bishops were committing themselves to raising 30 million dollars in the next five years for programs supporting the full flowering of these same peoples. En savoir plus…

In this context, it is good to remember that the archdiocese of Gatineau is spread out over the ancestral non-ceded territory of the Anishnabe (Algonquin) nation with whom the members of the Church seek to journey towards reconciliation, healing and friendship.

THE PATRONAL DAY OF OUR ARCHDIOCESE

Monday October 11, we will celebrate the feast of Mary, Mother of the Church, principal patroness of our archdiocese. This day commemorates the opening date of the Second Vatican Council. The preparatory phase of the Synod of Bishops that we are about to live gives concrete form to the vision of the Council. The launching Mass of this phase, scheduled for October 16 at St Joseph's Cathedral, will be the opportunity for our diocesan community to mark the feast of Mary, Mother of the Church. In addition, we invite all parishes in the diocese to celebrate this Marian feast in their Eucharistic celebrations on October 11.

THE SYNOD LAUNCH LITURGY

Pope Francis invites us to engage as a diocese in the preparatory phase of the XVI Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops to be held in 2023 under the theme "For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission". The opening liturgy of this phase for the Diocese of Gatineau will take place on Saturday, October 16 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral. As seating is limited, the celebration will be broadcast live on our YouTube platform

HELPING PARENTS PREPARE THEIR CHILDREN FOR THEIR FIRST COMMUNION

A team at the Archdiocese of Montreal has prepared resources for parents to use to help prepare their children for the sacraments of reconciliation and Eucharist.  Parish teams might want to review these materials to see whether they might be of interest in this coming year.  Please note that it would still be important to identify leaders of sacramental preparation to guide parents in this preparation.
