2021 Spring Vol. 5 no.1

Cheers to 20 years of Kinesiology!

This year, CKA celebrates 20 years of growth and success – and the people who made it possible. You, Kinesiologists from across Canada, are among those who have contributed to our success and who will continue to help us raise awareness of kinesiology. We wouldn't have grown to be a leader of kinesiology in Canada without every single volunteer, student and Kinesiologist over the years making their impact.

Throughout 2021, we'll be reviewing all the milestones, accomplishments and exceptional moments of our history and revealing those to come. And we invite you to join us in our celebrations.

In its 20th anniversary year, the Canadian Kinesiology Alliance wishes to thank its numerous volunteers for their time, devotion and support of our profession.

We honour the dedication and service of the CKA past presidents:

CKA #KINVISION2022 STRATEGIC PLAN YEAR 4 -
What is the CKA working on?

The CKA/ACK has achieved more actions and activities in the last three years than those established in its #KinVision2022 Strategic Plan. Two action plans were drafted from the #KinVision2022 Strategic Plan in the two sectors of Communications and Research & Development. The CKA has therefore returned to its simplest organizational chart of two working committees. Thank you and welcome to all the new volunteers who have signed up for these committees – there was an amazing turnout, with approximately 10 people on each committee. The CKA is dedicated to accomplishing its mission and exploring as many projects as possible to raise awareness of our profession and support its continued development.

In 2021, the CKA will be working on the following:

  • Developing a new 2021-2023 Marketing & Communication Plan, including a post-COVID-19 kinesiology plan (within the new marketing plan)
  • Supporting and hosting events: Bell Let's Talk, National Health & Fitness Day and 2021 National Kinesiology Week, including the Kin Can Conference and Canadian Kinesiology Award Celebrations
  • Presenting at conferences and trade shows: the Insurance Co. CHLIA 2021
  • Running a kinesiology social media campaign
  • Studying new legislation to help small PKAs
  • Developing a KinStartUpKit.ca webinar and university tour
  • Adding two new membership categories and reviewing core competency lists to implement in 2022
  • Producing material/articles for the CKA blog, podcasts, the eNewsletter and SM accounts (FB, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Fostering NHO relationships (continuing): EIMC, CCUPEKA, CSEP, CATA and ParticipACTION
  • Creating material for academics to use in classes to train students in clinical kinesiology and to provide information on the practice of kinesiology in Canada
  • Conducting a national examination feasibility study in participation with the PKAs
  • Providing PKAs with material for meetings with insurance companies and HR benefit plan managers
  • Strategizing on how to integrate systemic racism at the NHO level as well as at the individual Kin practitioner level
  • Continuing to improve its governance tools and methods to further adhere to the latest governance assessment report
  • And more!

Governance Assessment

In late 2020, the CKA began a governance assessment process with the following objectives:

  1. To strengthen the organization as per our strategic plan;
  2. To bring the CKA's structure to a higher level of governance as per many national not-for-profit organizations; and
  3. To raise the CKA's credibility as a strong organization.

With the help of Governance Plus (consultant), we performed an analysis of the CKA's main organizational constitutional documents (bylaws, policies and procedures manual, etc.) against the recognized governance principles and conducted interviews with the past president, president and ED. This analysis consisted of reviewing documents and governance processes against five principles of governance, 18 good practices and the eight roles of a board of directors. Additional points considered while analyzing the documents and interviewing volunteers/staff included discrepancies, contradictions, duplications and omissions between documents.

The Policy & Audit Committee has worked hard to perform this review and change the bylaws accordingly. There is no change in provincial powers, no change in votes – that is, each province still gets just one vote. The majority of recommendations involve modifications in semantics (names, words used, etc.) and in regrouping roles or policies vs. procedures. The changes in the bylaws will be implemented gradually between now and 2022.

In summary, the main changes for the PKAs are as follows:

  • Affiliates: PKAs will now be named as entities under the category "affiliates."
  • BOD delegates: PKA representatives on the CKA Board of Directors will be referred to as "delegates" in order to limit the perception of conflict of interest.
  • Three at-large: The current at-large positions on the board will be reserved for three business professionals from fields outside of kinesiology to bring council on business decisions (e.g., marketing, finance, etc.).
  • No more double provincial vote: Up to 2020, the three at-large positions were taken by Kinesiologists, which gave some provinces double votes. Now that these positions will be used by professionals outside of the kinesiology community, the provincial votes will be equal.

It's been one year!

Because of the rapid evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, regions and provinces have implemented changes for reopening and for adapting to the various restrictions set by local authorities. You are encouraged to follow the health guidelines in your region and to continue, when allowed, the practise of your profession.

Being confined to their homes, Kins have modified their business models to include online services; will they now opt for a hybrid model to offer clients both online and in-person kinesiology services?

The CKA team continues to operate remotely. In these difficult times, we are striving to maintain the flow of information to Kinesiologists and PKAs. We are available to share tools and information, to advise you and to help you continue your activities.

Stay informed about changes in your local area, as professional services will hopefully return to normal as the population gets access to vaccines. Follow the RETURN-TO-WORK COVID-19 FRAMEWORK as you get back to attending to your clients. This crisis and its management may have presented opportunities or ideas for your practice.

The CKA team is committed to helping you get through the pandemic. Be careful, be safe and take good care of yourself.

Bell Let's Talk - Mental Health

Millions of Canadians are affected by mental health illnesses and more continue to be diagnosed each year. It is therefore important to make every effort to reduce the stigma, talk about mental health and provide solutions to those struggling. Evidence shows that exercise can boost your mood, and research studies recommend getting professional support with aerobic and resistance exercise training.

The CKA invited Kins to promote their services on Bell Let's Talk Day on January 28, 2021. Promotional materials were prepared for Kins to use, and a social media campaign was run. This promotion reached 72,000 people. The lead message was to begin exercising in January with Bell Let's Talk Day and continue throughout the year until the 2021 NKW in November. In conjunction with Bell Let's Talk Day, Kinesiologists across Canada began a conversation about Canada's mental health. Millions of Canadians, including Kinesiologists, engaged in an open discussion about mental illness, offering new ideas for those struggling, including physical activity and exercise. The CKA has reminded Canadians affected by mental illness that Kinesiologists, as part of a professional health team, can help them to move better and live better. Canadians were invited to take on the eMentalFitChallenge to find strategies and opportunities to lead a more active lifestyle.

Virtual Kin Games 2021

The CKA, in partnership with PKAs, attended the 2021 virtual Kin Games, held online from March 19 to 21. For the fifth year, CKA sponsored the academic challenge with KinStartUpKit.ca, a website dedicated to helping students of kinesiology and physical activity as they enter the workforce or continue studies in specialties. Together with our partners, Hexfit Solutions, RockTape and Human Kinetics, the CKA invited students to take the time to better understand how kinesiology is practised in Canada and thus help students achieve their career goals.

The CKA applauds the organizing committee for conquering the many challenges posed by COVID-19 by showing courage and clear-headedness in shifting the Games to a virtual format. The CKA wishes to congratulate the organizing committee for an amazing job over the past year in preparing for this event.

FUTURE EVENTS - RESERVE THE DATES!

2021 CKA AGM – May 5, 2021

The Canadian Kinesiology Alliance/Alliance Canadienne de Kinésiologie (CKA/ACK) will hold its annual general meeting on May 5, 2021, at 20h ET.

The Nomination Committee has finalized a slate for the 2021-22 CKA Board of Directors and the PKAs have confirmed their delegates. The notice of meeting and agenda will be sent to all Kinesiologists on April 8, 2021. This year, in addition to the regular business of the AGM, there will be a motion to approve bylaw changes as per results of the governance assessment. The 2020 annual report will be available on the website. Everyone is welcome to attend via teleconference. More details coming soon!

3 Promotional Opportunities for Kins  –
National Health & Fitness Day – June 5, 2021

In conjunction with National Health & Fitness Day (NHFD), the CKA invites Kinesiologists to reserve June 5, 2021, to promote their services. The CKA will adapt the event's promotional material for Kins to use, and a social media campaign is scheduled. The lead message will continue to be the same: to begin exercising at these events and continue throughout the year until the 2021 National Kinesiology Week in November.

National Kinesiology Week – Nov. 22-28, 2021
Kin Can Conference – Nov. 27-28, 2021
Canadian Kinesiology Awards Celebrations – Nov. 28, 2021

Don't miss the biggest meet of the year for Kins! For a second year, the CKA, in collaboration with the PKAs, will be presenting these three events back to back.

The CKA will host the second annual virtual national Kin Can Conference, where esteemed speakers will address Kinesiologists across the country about a variety of topics that enlighten and embolden Kins and their practices. Events include a virtual trade show, a live Q&A with presenters at the top of their fields and professional networking. Last year's conference welcomed over 900 participants.

The CKA will also host the second annual Canadian Kinesiology Awards, which acknowledge outstanding achievement in Canada's kinesiology industry. The CKA is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Canadian professionals. A CKA award is a symbol of excellence as well as a powerful launching pad for careers, kinesiology clinics and universities looking to establish themselves in a competitive marketplace. Awards for Kin of the Year, Event of the Year, Researcher of the Year and Best Speaker of Kin Can Conference will be awarded to Kinesiologists nominated and selected from across Canada.

The NKW will be presented under a new theme to be announced soon. The CKA is seeking ambassadors – a Kin and a client – to promote mental health at the 2021 NKW. This initiative began last year and was very successful. Your role as an ambassador will be to speak on your experience as a Kin helping people struggling with mental health through exercise and physical activity. You must be available for phone interviews and to produce a short introduction video. Anyone interested can contact the CKA at info@cka.ca.

Regulation of Profession - New Concept

As the CKA continues to support the work of the PKAs in their quest to have kinesiology legislated in their province, the CKA was approached by the Pedorthic Association of Canada (PAC) to discuss a potential new model for legislation of "small" professions. This new model would be framed around eventually passing a law; a provincial health minister would be granted the right to give title protection and to mandate an existing organization to act as a college.

The CKA will participate in this thinking group because it aligns with its action plan to eventually create a round table forum of kin-related associations to discuss common issues (taxation, legislation, etc.).

Kin Games "Ownership" - CKA Proposal

In the past, student organizers of the Kin Games have consulted with the CKA, sponsor of the academic challenge, to engage in discussion and a brainstorming period to decide various issues. A recent survey indicated that 94% of students involved in the Kin Games are interested in having the CKA take over the ownership, since the Kin Games already rely on the CKA for advice. Hence the CKA has become, in their eyes, the leader of kinesiology and a reliable source that strives to strengthen organizations, align resources and activities, and raise the practice to its full potential across Canada.

The Kin Games is the largest annual intercollegiate student conference in Canada. Students gather to compete in academics, athletics, spirit and dance. Currently, the Kin Games is not sanctioned by any legally constituted entity; its structure and frame of reference rely on information being passed from the head coordinator of one year to the next. This is not a sustainable model for ensuring continuance and growth of the event to its greatest potential. Risk management is entirely on the local organizing committee, with no structured governing body recognized; even if the event operates under the hosting university, there is no set entity to guide organizers, as there would be for other events sanctioned by the national kinesiology governing body (e.g., Canada Games, Canadian championships, Olympic Games).

In assuming ownership of the Kin Games, the intention of the CKA is to offer continuance, growth and sustainability of the event. Under the CKA structure, a Kin Games committee would be established, composed of the alumni and other Kin volunteers from the community (practising Kins, clinics, partners, etc.).

The benefits for the Kin Games and for the CKA are many, and the CKA is still working with the Kin Games group to finalize an agreement that will hopefully be ready to implement in 2022.

Systemic Racism – Positioning

To align with its strategic plan and goal to raise awareness of the profession of kinesiology, the CKA attended the Sport for Life Canadian Summit, which brought together leaders working to enhance the quality of sport and physical activity in Canada. Sport for Life recognizes that quality sport and physical literacy offer rich benefits to Canadian society through improved health, stronger communities, higher sporting achievement and stronger national identity.

In 2021, the core concepts of long-term development including physical literacy, quality kin services, inclusion and lifelong accessibility are becoming the new normal in programming exercise and physical activity. The CKA believes there is a need to embed long-term development policies into all kinesiology- and physical activity-related organizations in order to (1) address systemic racism in exercise and physical activity, including but not limited to anti-Black racism and anti-Indigenous racism; (2) further our learning so we can contribute to the global conversation around anti-racism; and (3) determine the steps to take to disrupt, dismantle and abolish racism. It is time to move beyond being dependent on individual champions to an environment where quality experiences FOR ALL are entrenched within policies to ensure organizations sustain best practices.

The CKA mandated all of its committees to help establish a position statement on systemic racism and equality for all, including our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, participation and transparency related to the advancement of kinesiology. This initiative has been added in the Communications and R&D Action Plan to consider including in the Code of Conduct of a Director and Code of Ethics of a Kin.

This was also presented to the PKAs for their support. PKAs are invited to establish their own position statement related to systemic racism and to implement it in their governance as well as their kinesiology practice (e.g., code of ethics, how Kins can manage systemic racism, etc.). Material was shared about how other sport organizations are implementing such practices to hopefully inspire us all. The BCAK, the AKA and KPEI have considered adding an elective competency in Indigenous studies. The BCAK has already worked with an Indigenous group at UBC that presented to their members a webinar on inclusion.

Insurance – Health Benefit Presentation

In striving to increase awareness of kinesiology services to insurance companies, the CKA discovered that many PKAs are contacting these same companies to ensure kinesiology services are included in health benefit packages and that Kinesiologists are listed as professionals for which services are refunded. The PKAs have shared their material so that other provincial associations can use statistics or arguments made. Thank you to the FKQ, which has recently presented to a group of insurers and has permitted the CKA to share its presentation with the other PKAs.

Wearing of Cloth or Disposable Surgical Face Masks Has No Effect on Vigorous Exercise Performance in Healthy Individuals

Keely Shaw, Scotty Butcher, Jongbum Ko, Gordon A. Zello and Philip D.Chilibeck

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, November 3, 2020

Wearing face masks is recommended for the prevention of contracting or exposing others to cardiorespiratory infections, such as COVID-19. Controversy exists on whether wearing face masks during vigorous exercise a_ects performance. We used a randomized, counterbalanced cross-over design to evaluate the effects of wearing a surgical mask, a cloth mask, or no mask in 14 participants (7 men and 7 women; 28.2 +/- 8.7 y) during a cycle ergometry test to exhaustion.

Arterial oxygen saturation (pulse oximetry) and tissue oxygenation index (indicator of hemoglobin saturation/desaturation) at vastus lateralis (near-infrared spectroscopy) were assessed throughout the exercise tests. Wearing face masks had no effect on performance (time to exhaustion (mean +/- SD): no mask 622 +/- 141s, surgical mask 657 +/- 158s, cloth mask 637 +/- 153s (p = 0.20); peak power: no mask 234 +/- 56W, surgical mask 241+/- 57W, cloth mask 241 +/-  51W(p = 0.49)). When expressed relative to peak exercise performance, no di_erences were evident between wearing or not wearing a mask for arterial oxygen saturation, tissue oxygenation index, rating of perceived exertion, or heart rate at any time during the exercise tests. Wearing a face mask during vigorous exercise had no discernable detrimental e_ect on blood or muscle oxygenation, and exercise performance in young, healthy participants.

Return to Training in the COVID-19 Era: The Physiological Effects of Face Masks During Exercise

Danny Epstein, Alexander Korytny, Yoni Isenberg, et al.

Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports https://doi.org/10.1111/sms.13832

COVID-19 outbreak has a profound impact on almost every aspect of life. Universal masking is recommended as a means of source control. Routinely exercising in a safe environment is an important strategy for healthy living during this crisis. As sports clubs and public spaces may serve a source of viral transmission, masking may become an integral part of physical activity. This study aimed to assess the physiological effects of wearing surgical masks and N95 respirators during short-term strenuous workout. This was a multiple cross-over trial of healthy volunteers. Using a standard cycle ergometry ramp protocol, each subject performed a maximal exercise test without a mask, with a surgical mask, and with an N95 respirator. Physiological parameters and time to exhaustion were compared. Each subject served his own control.

Sixteen male volunteers (mean age and BMI of 34 } 4 years and 28.72 } 3.78 kg/ m2, respectively) completed the protocol. Heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and time to exhaustion did not differ significantly. Exercising with N95 mask was associated with a significant increase in end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) levels. The differences were more prominent as the load increased, reaching 8 mm Hg at exhaustion (none vs N95, P = .001). In conclusion, in healthy subjects, short-term moderate-strenuous aerobic physical activity with a mask is feasible, safe, and associated with only minor changes in physiological parameters, particularly a mild increase in EtCO2. Subjects suffering from lung diseases should have a cautious evaluation before attempting physical activity with any mask.

Applying Clinical Reasoning Theories to Kinesiology: Advancing the Education of Future Healthcare Professionals

Rebecca Ataman and Robyn J. Ibeyb. International Journal of Kinesiology in Higher Education https://doi.org/10.1080/24711616.2021.1881418

In Canada, kinesiology academic units are undergoing change. The growth of kinesiology as a health profession is reflected in increased clinical course offerings to train student clinicians. These courses require clinical educators, however, not all programs have clinical staff and faculty with the required knowledge or experience. In particular, prospective clinical educators may lack fundamental knowledge of clinical reasoning theory. Clinical reasoning is defined as problem solving and judgment in relation to patient or client assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management, and is considered to be essential for the development of autonomous health professionals. Clinical reasoning theory is applied in an educational context to streamline and enhance student clinician development. Unlike in the education of other health professionals, there has been no literature detailing the application of clinical reasoning theory to the kinesiology educational context. Thus, the objectives of this paper are to: (1) introduce the theories in clinical reasoning relevant to kinesiology, (2) link these theories to practical educational strategies and, (3) connect these strategies directly to the teaching of clinical kinesiology subjects.

Design and Validity of a Choice-Modeling Questionnaire to Analyze the Feasibility of Implementing Physical Activity on Prescription at Primary Health-Care Settings

Sergio Calonge-Pascual, Francisco Fuentes-Jiménez, José A. Casajús Mallén and Marcela González-Gross International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, September 11, 2020

Worldwide health policies are trying to implement physical activity on prescription (PAP) at healthcare settings. However, there is not a proper methodology to analyze PHC organizational staff factors. This study aims to validate two questionnaires to assess the self-perception of nurses and general practitioners to implement PAP at primary healthcare (PHC) settings. The designed choice-modeling Google-form questionnaire was sent to 11 expert nurses and 11 expert sports medicine physicians. Experts evaluated each question on a 1–5 points Likert-type scale according to their expertise. Aiken's V coefficient values ±0.75 were used to validate separately each question using the Visual Basic-6.0 software. A total of 10 sports medicine physicians and 10 nurses with 28.4 ± 5.1 y and 16.3 ± 11.8 y of PAP experience, respectively, validated the questionnaire. One expert in each group was not considered for offering 3 ± SD answers in 2 questions respect to the mean of the rest of experts. Final Aiken's V coefficient values were 0.89 (0.77–1.00) for the nurses' questionnaire and 0.84 (0.77–0.95) for the physicians' one. The questionnaires designed to assess the PAP self-perception of PHC nurses and physicians were validated. This methodology could be used to analyze PHC organizational staff factors in order to achieve an efficient PAP implementation in other PHC contexts.

Exercise Is Medicine Canada

EIMC is still in the process of restructuring and is awaiting the results of a feasibility study of its legal status. The CKA has increased its involvement by attending regular advisory board meetings, regrouping eight health care professions, to assist them in gaining legal status and website translation to uphold the high standard of reputation for all Kinesiologists.

CHLIA with OKA

MOVING THE BODY, HEALING THE MIND is the theme of CHLIA's virtual workshop, to be held June 1-3, 2021. The OKA, in collaboration with the CKA and PKA partners, will be talking about exploring the science and clinical practice of exercise in mental health. Mental health claims are dramatically increasing in Canada and other countries – yet nearly two-thirds of people with a known mental health disorder never seek help from a professional, according to the WHO. But there's strong evidence for the role exercise and physical activity can play in treating conditions like depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. The rise in mental health concerns among university students has led to an increased demand for counselling services. This increase drives demand for additional resources. Researchers at the University of Windsor analyzed the effects of a six-week physical activity intervention on students' mental health. They found that physical activity is effective for improving mental health and quality of life, which may reduce students' need for counselling services.

In addition, mental health conditions often come with significant co-morbidities, such as COPD, diabetes and heart disease. Poor health and chronic disease are up to three times more likely among people who report significant emotional distress. Here, too, physical activity can help. The Public Health Agency of Canada has identified over 25 chronic conditions for which physical activity and exercise can help reduce associated risks.

Insurers will learn the science behind how exercise positively affects our mental health, as well as the practical application by researchers and registered Kinesiologists working in the field to bring the benefits of exercise and physical activity to the mind as well as the body.

Extended Professional Insurance Program

Inquiries were made to our national insurance program (provided by PROLINK/Trisura) about possibly offering an automatic insurance extension to members who do not renew their insurance (e.g., a member who is retiring, returning to school or going on parental leave for a year). This would remove the liability (risk factor) from the CKA or PKAs in the event a member has a claim after leaving the association (related to a previous incident when they were an active member with insurance), and they counterclaim against the CKA/PKA that they were not adequately informed of the availability of the extended reporting period, if the member failed to activate it.

Further to negotiations, the CKA successfully concluded an agreement with PROLINK/Trisura to include automatic extended reporting period (ERP) coverage for all CKA members, effective for 2021. The ERP coverage will automatically be provided to any CKA member who does not renew their E&O coverage. This makes the process simple and offers great value to the members. Trisura has agreed in principle to provide six years of ERP in every policy for all CKA members. This provides more protection than CATA and CSEP.

Health Locator

Change the game, don't let the game change you

Like most new creations, Health Locator came alive from our personal experiences, which happened to be in the healthcare industry. After three motor vehicle accidents in seventeen months, which included a near fatal motorcycle accident, we found ourselves struggling to find the health care services that we needed. Our lawyer, discharge coordinator and family doctor were not able to help us, as they themselves were not aware of the services that were being provided in our local community. Once we were discharged from the hospital, we were left to figure this out for ourselves. What did this mean? It meant hours of internet searches to find the services we needed, then it meant hours of telephoning the clinics we found to see which professional at their clinic offered those services. When on the phone, we had to ask if they accepted motor vehicle accident clients and if their clinic was wheelchair accessible. If they said No, our search would continue.

We had to do this research while dealing with our multiple injuries (brain injuries, etc.) and  hile trying hard to not succumb to depression when remembering what life used to be like. We live in a smaller community which is one hour from the city therefore travelling back and forth for treatments became exhausting and it did not take us long to realize that we would be in this difficult place for a long time.

Helping Canadians with COPD during this extended period of pandemic

By Julie Lopez, Registered Kinesiologist

As Kinesiologists, last year has been one of the toughest for our industry. More than ever we need to draw on our inner strength and the love for our profession. Be bold, be proactive and reach out to offer our help. Showcase what we can do for the nation, especially for those with chronic conditions.

We have to innovate.

People living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), have been particularly isolated and therefore at high risk from the perils of sedentary behaviour. Most have had to continue with their exercise rehabilitation program on their own. But when breathing is a challenge during every movement, the motivation to do this is hard to find.

Kinesiologists can help those with COPD maintain a high quality of life and build the confidence to continue to keep active.

An opportunity for Kinesiologists to work with COPD patients

Respiplus™, is a Canadian non-profit organisation most recognized for successfully developing the "gold standard" model of self-management education. "Living Well with COPD" (www.livingwellwithcopd.com), which has been implemented across the world since 1998.

Respiplus™ has developed a specialized training course for Kinesiologists, "COPD management for Exercise Professionals", available in its professional education platform. This eXpand course will guide you with proper assessments, along with safe and effective program design to help improve the strength, stamina and quality of life of people living with COPD. It will help you recognize the challenges experienced by those living with COPD and find ways to change behaviour and integrate healthy habits. Using behavioural interventions you will be able to guide a client to find their intrinsic motivation to develop self-efficacy and long-term adherence to health-enhancing behaviours.

Respiplus™ has partnered with the Lung Health Foundation and WillKin Health to pilot a unique exercise program for COPD individuals, COPD ConnEx. This program will allow Kinesiologists who have gained knowledge in COPD management to work with clients, either in person or remotely during the pandemic.

Please contact emily@respiplus.com for more information on COPD, Respiplus's eXpand learning course or the COPD ConnEx program.

How Can Kinesiologists Manage the Impact of a Privacy Breach?

Dealing with a security incident can be stressful and overwhelming. And it might be hard to get the answers you need, especially since privacy regulations vary between provinces. But with CKA and PROLINK, you won't have to worry. In the event of a breach, you can benefit from these complementary privacy and security breach services through your CKA professional insurance program:

Professional Legal and HR Advice

As a member of the CKA, your Professional Liability policy includes access to specialized legal and HR information through the Trisura Legal Assistance Hotline. Simply provide your PROLINK policy number and an intake agent will schedule a convenient time for a certified lawyer or HR specialist to call you back. Services are available in English and French from 8AM to midnight (local time), seven days a week at 1 866 945 5207, and they're unlimited. There's no cap to the duration or number of calls you make.

Privacy Breach Consulting Services

In the event of a breach, you can also access breach remediation services at no extra cost to help you quickly develop a clear incident response strategy. Services include:

Breach counselling to assess the severity of the incident;

Crisis management services to determine the steps to recovery;

Public relations assistance to help restore your business's reputation;

Legal support to document the steps taken and remediation services provided.

At first sign of a breach, contact your Trisura claims team at 1-866-856-9203 or claims@trisura.com for more assistance. Learn more here.

Privacy Breach Insurance

Even if you do everything in your power to safeguard PHI, a third party could still infiltrate your systems through illegal means. That's why PROLINK recommends that all Kinesiologists maintain a minimum of $50,000 in Privacy and Security Breach Expense Coverage and $100,000 in Network Security and Privacy Liability Coverage to protect against these losses.

The Privacy and Security Breach Expense Limit part of your coverage can be used towards the expenses you and your company incur as a result of the breach. That includes: client notification and credit monitoring costs, regulatory research and compliance, forensic investigations, public relations consulting to manage reputational fallout, restoration costs to replace damaged or lost data, and more.

The Network Security and Privacy Liability Limit component of your Privacy Breach Insurance will protect you in the event you're sued by a third party or investigated by the Privacy Commissioner. It'll cover damages, settlements, and regulatory fines up to your limit.

A dedicated Data Security and Privacy Breach Insurance policy can help you get your digital assets back in order and your practice back online. The best part? It's only an extra $49 + applicable PST. To learn more about your risks and how insurance can help connect with PROLINK today!

Want to Make
More
Money as a Kin?

If you want to grow your kin skills, build an enviable reputation and be successful on your own terms then you need to master the art and science of functional testing.

What's functional testing you might ask? Simply put, it's evaluating real life movements that your clients need to be able to comfortably do every day. These movements may have applications in sport performance, general fitness, employment environments or simply help with recreational pursuits like gardening or riding a bike around the neighbourhood.

First Line Education has been helping kinesiologists upskill their clinical practices since 2007. It's our mission to teach kins how to take care of themselves by transforming their theoretical knowledge into practical skills so they can put coins in their jeans.

First Line Education's Functional Testing for the Upper & Lower Body course is perfect for helping you lay the groundwork for creating exercise programs full of meaningful exercises for your clients. It runs for two days, May 29 & 30, 2021 from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM EST. It's chalk full of client case studies as well as practical skills for you to use the very next week!

There's two main reasons why you NEED to take this course:

  1. You'll learn easy-to-use screen, test and assess formulas so you can standardize your assessment process saving you precious time and energy which means you can see more clients, get more referrals and make more money.
  2. You'll gain access to research-based testing protocols so you can quickly and confidently create customized programs for clients which means they'll trust you and keep coming back!

How's that for tightening up your assessment game?

This course is offered live online with all course material available in your own online library. A workbook accompanying the course means you don't have to take notes! Go back to the course videos over and over as you practice. Get a course completion certificate so you can claim continuing education credits.

Sharing Information

Promoting Kinesiologists, and how kinesiology contributes to the health and wellbeing of British Columbians, is a primary initiative this spring.  The BCAK is actively marketing with a postcard campaign targeting doctors across the province and is also running a 15 second television campaign that is broadcast 12 times a week for a 12 week campaign that targets the public.  Link to advertisement here.

The AKA has been working alongside many different stakeholders to further our progress towards regulating kinesiology in the province. Two new membership streams have been created to better meet the needs of our members and prospects. This year we are transitioning onto the Yapla system to improve external functionality and internal efficiency.

SK

Although SK is the only province in Canada that is not a CKA-recognized provincial kinesiology association, there is growing interest and exploration around SK becoming a recognized PKA.

The MKA has not taken on any new project lately.

All efforts are put towards KEEN; it has increased membership with
KEEN and with college exam to come.

The year 2020 has been a most disturbing year from all points of view and one that has completely turned our personal and professional lives upside down.
Nonetheless, it also allowed us to seize favorable opportunities, and we all rose to the challenge of being present, proactive and, above all, innovative.
So, well done to all of us! To learn more about the evolution of the legislation request and the efforts made by the federation in 2020, we invite you to consult our annual report.

NBKA has produced a great social media campaign and is more involved in raising awareness of kinesiology aligned with beginning their process to a legislation request.

KANS is now restructured having held its AGM on March 9th 2021. A newly elected Board of Directors is composed of very dynamic Kins eager to take on the many challenges.

Kinesiology PEI continues to follow the steps needed to apply for regulation as a health profession. We are also working with other PKAs to develop an entry-to-practice exam for future members.

Further to presenting to NL Health Accord: a group of individuals from universities and government whose mandate is to create a 10-year plan to change the health system, NLKA has been asked to provide more information on the profession aligned with beginning the legislation request process.
